James Conway Obituary

James 'Jim' Conway
April 27, 1945 - Feb. 10, 2024
Jim (James) Conway died peacefully in his sleep, early Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, following a brief illness. Loving husband, father and new grandfather, Jim was beloved by countless people for his kindness, wisdom and warmth. A licensed psychotherapist with more than 40 years' experience, he was a highly respected and nationally sought-after addictions expert. In particular, he devoted himself to helping physicians overcome substance abuse issues and recommit their lives to healing themselves and others. He led hundreds of doctors into recovery, and for decades, his patients have sent heartfelt tributes and thanks to Jim.
Born and raised in Southern California, Jim spent decades in Venice, Calif., before moving to Portland in 2014, where he expanded his desire to help and taught recovery in rural and Native American communities in addition to being a faculty member at PCC. Jim loved to laugh, and eat, and cook giant meals for his loved ones and friends. He listened with exceptional empathy and gave generously of his heart and spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Laurie Monday; their daughter, Grace Conway; and his newborn grandson, Oliver James Conway. Additionally, he is mourned by his first wife, Jill Conway. Celebration of life to be held in April.

My sincere condolences to Jim's family and friends. My earliest recollection of JC goes back to Aquinas H.S. (early sixties). JC was always a great source of humor and, in his unique way, let all our classmates know that there was humor even in the most serious of circumstances. He was not the class clown because he was too cerebral for such a title. He knew how to defuse a situation with just the right amount of humor. Sadly for me, I lost track of JC until we had a class reunion and his sense of humor was still there. Rest in God's eternal peace, mi amigo, until we meet again.

Jim Conway was my friend ,mentor and colleague, I learned more about addiction and recovery from Jim than I did in school. He supported me in developing a course and manual for Dental students in treating patients who were chemically addicted. I cherish his friendship and grateful for our times spent together. I send my heartfelt thoughts to Laurie and her growing family.

I will miss our office chats filled w/laughter, wisdom and tales of his daughter, wife, travels and other life journeys w/his jovial laugh and warm smile. I hope he knew how he would make my day when he stopped by and filled my hectic office w/calmness. I wish we had that one last phone call, chat or hug. You are missed my friend & still learning from you.

I first met Jim in 1989 when he taught a class I took at UCLA Extension. He was kind and supportive then, and was a generous and loving friend, colleague, mentor, and inspiration up until very shortly before his death. His vision, determination, and jovial pugnacity as well as his joie de vivre, excellent cooking skills, and joy in social gatherings are qualities I will always cherish. Jim's warm heart and compassion touched so very many people. With deep fondness, Tracy

In recent years, Jim liked to use the nickname of "Lux" among his Aquinas HS graduate buddies, Class of '63. This was taken from the school's motto of "Lux et Veritas", meaning Light and Truth. Lux may now be physically gone from us but his Light will shine forever in our memories of his wit, his intelligence, and his kindness. Requiescat in pace, Lux.

It was a great privilege to work with and know Jim. I am saddened he is gone. Working side by side with Jim at Promises Professionals Treatment Program in Santa Monica was amazing. He was such a powerful positive person, always available to patients and other staff, he made a big difference in the world. He had tremendous passion for helping impaired professionals. Jim was like a brother. I always enjoyed his friendly calls to check in. His sense of humor, his articulate conversations, his generosity were always evident. I miss him.

My deepest sympathies go to you, Laurie and Grace. Jim's sudden death was a shock to all of us, and one can only imagine the grief you bear at this most difficult time.
As a high school classmate, I have many very fond memories of the teenage Jim - in particular his budding epicurean bent and iconic sense of humor - and I hope to share some of these at the April memorial.
Simply said, Jim was our Renaissance Man and I will dearly miss his warmth, his insights and his humor.
Affectionately,
Dan Boyle
